What is an epic ride? I don't know, but here is one for your consideration. Napa to Sacramento, one way, via Lake Berryessa. Start with the long climb out of Napa Valley on Monticello Rd to Moskowite corners.
By the time you get to the dam that creates Lake Berryessa, the legs are pretty well beat. You can take a rest at the dam overlook and admire the canyon and structure of the dam.
The downhill off the dam is your reward for your efforts. Winters lies below and is a worthwhile stop for water or snacks. Check a map for Putah Creek Rd for a less traveled route. For the rest of the ride it is perfectly flat to Davis. The route through Davis is not very well marked which is surprising for such a bike friendly town.
And then it's on to Sacramento over the causeway along I-80.
Is that epic or not?

The approach to the State Capitol is a spectacular conclusion. Large trees and exotic palms greet you when you arrive. This ride is about 70 miles long, takes you over a mountain range and you cross some of the finest agricultural lands in the country.
