Advocacy Actions & Other Accomplishments
From new bike lanes to new bike plans . . . from a Bike Fest celebrating bicycling to more recognition for bicyclists. Napa Bike was busy in 2012 making riding safer in Napa County. JOIN NAPA BIKE.
Napa Bike works every day to make riding safer in Napa County. There were some significant steps forward in 2012. Some were easy to see, like the many improvements to bicycling infrastructure in Napa, which helped Napa earn Bronze Level Bicycle Friendly Community status. Others are not entirely visible (yet), like the approval of the Channelization Project in St. Helena which will finally fix the Whitehall Lane intersection of bike lanes and rail crossing. Others are foundation elements, like passage of comprehensive bike plans in all towns but 1, plus a plan for the unincorporated areas of the County.
Here are highlights of some of the projects we've been involved with in 2012.
Napa County's Bike Commuters of the Year
This year Napa County had an impressive array of excellent nominees for Bicycle Commuter of the year. Two people stood-out for very different reasons, so the Napa BCOY for 2013 is a tie!
Our first BCOY, Kyle Heartt, demonstrates how bicycling can work as family transportation to his friends, co-workers and neighbors on a daily basis. Kyle and his 9 year old son, Tristan, commute to school and work ever day, rain or shine, through what passes for rush-hour traffic in Napa. Kyle and Tristan's commitment to bike commuting is an inspiration to everyone who sees them.
Our second winner, Doug Johnson, regularly commutes from Napa to his job in Vallejo, a 24-mile round trip. When asked if he's riding on any given day, he always replies, "Of course!" He isn't deterred by weather conditions or the heavy traffic on Highway 29 that is the major part of his commute. Doug's commitment makes it clear to those who know him that if you don't ride to work it for some reason, that reason is very likely just an excuse.
Congratulations Kyle and Doug!

Legendary Tour 2012 - Awesome!
The Universe appeared to have aligned just right to make this, the 2nd Legendary Tour, Napa Bike's primary fundraiser, a wonderful event. The weather cooperated, the Legends, Andy Hampsten and Bob Roll, arrived ready to do their parts, all places were sold out, and local businesses as well as Napa Bike volunteers stepped up to provide the VIP guests a memorable experience.
We appreciate the generous contributions of the riders and the sponsors who make it possible for us to continue our mission of advancing cycling safety in Napa County.

Beyond Napa County
Napa Bike Storms Halls of Congress!
The 2013 National Bike Summit. sponsored by the League of American Bicyclists, was be a big one. The focus was on telling the story of the economic benefits cycling brings to Napa County and to the nation as a whole.
Three Napa Bike Board members joined more than 800 advocates, government staff, and cycling enthusiasts of all types on Capitol Hill to explain the benefits of bicycling. In pure economic terms, bicycling pours billions of dollars into the U.S. economy, creating jobs and boosting community development from coast to coast. Our team helped make it clear that bicycling is an important and powerful constituency that deserves attention and support. Read the complete story here
