2009 Advocacy Accomplishments

  • Trail AccessConducted a successful advocacy campaign to improve biking conditions and secure new signs and trail maps throughout the paths around Stanly Lane and Cuttings Wharf.

  • Promoted and advocated for an update to the Countywide Bike Plan that resulted in the NCTPA moving forward to secure a consultant to write and update the bike plan to be completed sometime in 2010.
  • Advocated for the countywide plan to include individual bike plans for the City of Napa and St.Helena.
  • Advocated for the completion of the Commuter Trail in the City of Napa which is slated to be started in September/October of 2009 with completion of the project expected in early 2010.
  • Advocated for more “Share the Road” signs throughout Napa County and increased bike parking in the downtown corridor of Napa.
  • The Safe Routes to Schools program was brought to Napa County through efforts from the NCBC. This school year over five hundred elementary school children will receive hands on bicycle education, including traffic safety and simple bike repair. Next year they are hoping to expand the program to reach over a thousand.

Napa County Bicycle Coalition Public Policy Priorities 2009-2010

  • Develop and Improve Bicycle Infrastructure
    • Monitor and support the update to the countywide bicycle plan.
    • Work with the City of St. Helena, Napa and American Canyon to provide support to the creation of individual bicycle transportation plans.
    • Advocate for construction of the first segment of the Vine Trail in the City of St. Helena.
    • Advocate for the completion of the Commuter Trail in the City of Napa.
    • Advocate for the construction of the Napa River Trail .
    • Advocate for construction of Class II bike lanes from Big Ranch Rd. to Silverado Trail.
    • Advocate for funding for the construction of the Napa County Bay Trail.
  • Identify Access and Safety Issues
    • Advocate for safe, continuous routes for bicyclists of all types.bike route sign
    • Advocate for funding for the project list for the City of Napa and throughout the County.
    • Provide testimony and input at public meetings.
    • Mobilize advocates and educate the public regarding the status of street/bicycle projects.
  • Promote Alternative Transportation Modesalternative trasportation
    • Build awareness and promote the benefits of alternative transportation.
    • Engage all levels of government, businesses and the public to consider the impact of their transport choices and how cleaner forms of transportation can benefit our environment, our health and our overall quality of life.
    • Promote biking, walking, carpooling, telecommuting and other forms of alternative transportation on September 22nd in honor of international “Car Free Day”.
    • Work collaboratively to promote and build local support for Bike To Work Month and Bike To Work Day on may 14th.
