Our Safe Streets program fills the gap in driver and bicyclist education, to help make our streets safe and welcoming for all roadway users.
The Program
Our Safe Streets Program was started in 2019, with the goal of providing more direct, hands-on education and outreach to local communities around roadway safety for all users, including bicyclists, pedestrians, transit, and vehicle drivers.
More than any other factor, the safety of our roadways impacts whether we ride a bike, walk, or drive a car for short trips around our community. Based on nationwide survey data, more than 50% of people would ride their bikes more if they felt roadways were safer.
Over the past 5 years, there have been nearly 100 injury collisions a year involving bicyclists or pedestrians, and 13 fatalities during that timeframe. Most of these crashes occur on the local roads that we walk, ride, or drive every day.
The Safe Streets program aims to educate, inform, and engage local residents on these important issues through virtual and in-person trainings, bicycle safety workshops, with the long-term goal of getting more people out walking and riding, and doing so safely.
Thank You!!
