Whether you ride for fun, fitness, or transportation, join the Napa County Bicycle Coalition (NCBC) for a free, comprehensive two-part Smart Cycling 101 course. The Smart Cycling 101 curriculum is designed to teach bicyclists of all abilities how to ride safely and effectively, build confidence, and provide valuable on-bike experience. The curriculum is developed by the League of American Bicyclists and will be taught NCBC’s certified League Cycling Instructors. The curriculum includes topics such as:
- Rules of the road
- Shifting gears
- Where to ride on the road
- How to navigate intersections
- Types of hazards and how to avoid them
The St. Helena Smart Cycling 101 course will kick-off with a two-hour evening classroom session on Zoom that covers the basics of preparing to ride, principles of bicycling, principles of traffic law, bike infrastructure, and hazards in bicycling. The classroom session is followed by a 3.5 hour on-bike session the following Saturday morning, during which participants will practice bicycle handling skills, hazard avoidance maneuvers, and riding with traffic during a wrap-up group ride. Participants must attend the classroom session to participate in the on-bike session. Completion of St. Helena Smart Cycling 101 can be used by participants as the prerequisite class to become an LCI.
