Initial Safe Routes Evaluation
Our staff walked and biked around every Napa County public school to identify and photograph over 600 barriers to safe walking/biking during initial infrastructure evaluations.
From 2018-22, the Napa County Bicycle Coalition worked with 31 public schools in Napa County to identify barriers to students safely walking and biking to each school site, brainstorm solutions to those barriers, and develop comprehensive reports and action plans to eliminate those barriers.
School stakeholders were engaged in a walk audit, a group walkaround of the area around a school site during arrival or dismissal periods, in order to identify walking/biking barriers for students and discuss experiences traveling to and from school. NCBC staff developed infrastructure and programmatic recommendations to address those barriers based on walk audit results, existing plans, and other contextual criteria. Background information, walk audit process and results, and recommendations can be found for each school site in that site’s walk audit report.
