Safe Routes to School Walk Audit Project (2018-22)

From 2018-22, the Napa County Bicycle Coalition worked with 31 public schools in Napa County to identify barriers to students safely walking and biking to each school site, brainstorm solutions to those barriers, and develop comprehensive reports and action plans to eliminate those barriers.

School stakeholders were engaged in a walk audit, a group walkaround of the area around a school site during arrival or dismissal periods, in order to identify walking/biking barriers for students and discuss experiences traveling to and from school. NCBC staff developed infrastructure and programmatic recommendations to address those barriers based on walk audit results, existing plans, and other contextual criteria. Timeline

2018
Initial Safe Routes Evaluation
Our staff walked and biked around every Napa County public school to identify and photograph over 600 barriers to safe walking/biking during initial infrastructure evaluations.
2019-2020
Community Walk Audits
We met with school staff, parents, students, and other school stakeholders to hold community Walk Audits to observe drop-off/pick-up times at school sites, identify barriers to students walking/biking to school, and explore solutions. The Covid-19 pandemic resulted in some virtual Walk Audits or staff-only Walk Audits.
2021
Parent Survey
We contracted with EMC Research to survey 459 Napa County parents of K-8 students to learn bout parent perceptions towards students walking/biking to school and identify opportunities to make walking/biking to school be and feel safer.
2022
Walk Audit Reports
We compiled data, Walk Audit feedback, and background information into Walk Audit reports for each school site. Reports outline identified barriers to students walking/biking to school and recommendations to address these barriers.
